Podaa Podi- STR with Varalakshmi

Silambarasan has always been a rebel with a distinct style and vision who loves to break away from the constraints of prevailing trends. This has helped him to carve his own niche in Tamil cinema and Podaa Podi is an example of that. It is an engaging watch because it wins you over with its heart warming, simple charm, immensely likeable characters, and the intrinsic humour in the writing. It's the film's excellent dialogues that ensure there's never a dull moment.

The story is set in London where Arjun (STR), an urbane guy with western lifestyle and superior Tamil values bumps into Nisha (Varalaxmi) a salsa dancer who is a cheerful chatterbox. It’s their journey of love, marriage and understanding each other told in a rather different manner.
The debutant director Vignesh Shivan has made it a youthful romantic musical with his style of writing and presentation of each scene. It is the tongue in cheek humour in the dialogues, especially those regarding Tamil culture and the typical male attitude that works big in the film.
The magic of this film lies in the performances of STR and Varalakshmi. Despite the risk of being overshadowed by STR, Varalakshmi is the big surprise here as she makes a promising debut and brings alive her character with not just those smart lines, but with the kind of confidence and candour. She also dubs in her own voice.

VTV Ganesh as hero’s uncle is a scream and as usual his combo with STR brings the house down. Shobhana is adequate as heroine’s aunt. STR, leaves an indelible impression with a performance that is understated and mature, and indeed the perfect foil to Varalakshmi's boisterousness. Together, they set off such sparks, that the strength of their chemistry alone is enough to make up for several golden moments in the film.

Making a conscious effort to avoid clichĂ©s, the screenplay rustles up a bunch of pleasant surprises in the form of some unforgettable scenes that stay in your head long after you have left the cinema. One such scene that will stay in your mind is Arjun’s outburst in front of Nisha’s house to Sobhana.
